“With great interest, I have read your tender and hereby register as …” – An application that begins with these words has a good chance of landing directly in a pile with a cancellation. Why? Because the entry is not imaginative and boring and thus shows the best why the application and Blabla phrases in the application writing have no way. What are the typical phrases you should avoid and how to do what is better explained in this article.
1. The worst phrase and why they should not go
Who in his cover letter uses an old phrase that the person in charge has read a thousand times and more, which says: I am not imaginative and nothing special. An unimaginative employee, who places himself in the category 0-8-15, does not like to hire a company.
In addition, an applicant submits himself with a bad cover letter as lazy and uninterested. Why? Because in many old (!) Applications, the counselors are exactly like these boring application phrases in the sample letters. Who uses them today says: I can read and write. However, to really think about a company or job, I lack in desire or time.
Anyone who starts a cover letter with the above or similar words runs the risk of having a chance at work at the beginning of the gambling letter. But also in the further journey of the application, there are still many fat-phrases, which must be avoided. The following hit list of the worst words shows the biggest carelessness in the cover letter and also how to do it better.
1.1. “Ladies and Gentlemen” in Respect
Greetings Ladies and gentlemen are very popular if no one can be contacted is mentioned in a job advertisement. But it witnessed a lack of interest. Otherwise, you will take the trouble to find out who is responsible for your application, right?
Tip: Find the person you can contact and also the exact spelling of the name. Exactly check whether the person being contacted is not mentioned in the job advertisement – the non-personal address in the cover letter is even more taboo. If this doesn’t happen, it’s best to contact the company and ask who you can handle your application. Anyone who researches online is at risk of using people who are wrong in contact with large companies. And it’s no less embarrassing.
1.2. Boring Entrance
Sentences like “I hereby submit as …” and “With great interest I have read your job advert at www.musterjob.de” has one thing in common : they bore you and entered in the application form category. This places them in the red list in the cover letter.

Be sure to cover it with an example and not just make a claim. Where can I find a suitable starting point on your CV? The company wants a candidate with a degree in business administration? Great, then explain what priorities you have chosen – ideally matching exactly the work profile. Remember that the most important requirements that applicants must meet are usually high in job advertisements. This must be followed up in a letter and explain your competence.
Enumeration of seminars and further education is as taboo – the information is part of a curriculum vitae. However, if you have completed industry-specific training and set you apart from your competitors, you must dedicate one or two sentences for this training in a cover letter.
1.4. “Team-able”, “flexible”, “motivated”
In explaining their own competencies, applicants like to refer to the following popular words: “I am a team player, motivated and flexible”. What might be quite positive for you, boring staff, sentences like this every day to deal with. And let’s be honest: this is actually a problem that is expected by every company. Or do you want your team to be selfish, stubborn who always wants to uphold their heads and only make services with rules? If you still want to mention one of the competencies mentioned above in your application, you must also make it credible, for example, as follows: “I prove the work of my team professionally as a training officer and personally as a sports coach in an association.”
Further terms suspected of being a monologue, which can be found repeatedly in cover letters, are:
- Result oriented
- Value added
Better, than, however, to be satisfied with a typical phrase, you will prove your qualifications for a position on the basis of certain projects that you have mastered. For example, a student who is interested in training as a banker can explain his participation in the stock market game, where students are given virtual capital that they should multiply and thus know the financial market in a fun way. So he can convincingly convey his interest in the financial industry. The apprentice, who wants to leave his training company, can use cross-departmental interdisciplinary projects to justify his organization’s capabilities.
2. Phrasendrescherei in terms of motivation and purpose
Who in the application identifies only the purpose of working in an international company or to place qualifications in the service of market leaders, disseminating application phrases without content and running the risk of being categorized into the “Schleimer” category. Explain better what you want to achieve in the company and why the job is so attractive to you. The higher the position, the more concrete the future vision must be. For example, the head of the new marketing department can set itself the goal of developing an online marketing strategy that aims to continuously increase customer loyalty and increase revenue per customer by 15%. This shows that this is an applicant who deals with the company in detail and has understood where to go.
3. Fake simplicity at the end
Not a simple sentence, but strategically not a smart move. Phrases like “I would love to be active in your business” or “I hope my application can convince you” nothing lost in the cover letter. Remember, you have a lot to offer and the company has an interest in getting to know you.

I look forward to meeting you.” In this way, you anticipate that you are truly at the invitation for job interviews.
